The original definition of sin was 'to miss the mark' as an archer misses a target. Perhaps this definition is a way to leave behind all the toxic ways sin has been used. Perhaps the metaphor of the bullseye and the target can teach us something deeply true about the nature of the spiritual life - and within it our own search for the right targets.
