Joseph Campbell argues that what is required to be an adult is a willingness to undergo the mythical Journey into Heroism. Campbell tells us that our personality unfolds from birth to death on a journey of “individuation”—which is a process of becoming one’s true and whole self. For a Boy to become a Man, then is to become a truly authentic person. Not who your parents want you to be, not who society wants you to be, but to be YOU, the one and only person you were born to be. Today as we celebrate Fatherhood, let’s examine how our society has failed in producing mature Men.
