Sacred Currents: Earth-Centered Gatherings

Updated: Jul 29

San Gabriel is the name of this Fellowship, the river that runs through Georgetown, and the river valley many of us call home. This valley is also the ancestral homeland of the Tonkawa people, who called it Takachue Pouetsu: "the land of good water." Sacred Currents, our reimagined earth-centered gatherings, takes its name in honor of that living heritage, strengthening our connection to the river, the land, one another, and ourselves.

Join us on Wednesday evenings beginning on August 12, 2026!

6:00-7:00 pm: Small group meetings (Singing Resistance, Connections Group, etc.)

7:00-7:15 pm: Transition, fellowship, and teatime.

7:15-8:15 pm: Sacred Currents Gathering.

Sincerely,

Eric Hepburn, Minister

Descriptions of the gathering types:

  • New Moon Sound Bath - Sound bath healing sessions uses instruments like crystal bowls, brass bowls, chimes, and gongs to create calming vibrations that support deep relaxation, rest, and reset. Bring a yoga mat, pillow, blanket, or whatever you need to make yourself comfortable on the floor. Sound bath is usually best experienced prone.

  • Rising Moon Drum Journey - We call on the directions, the spirits, and the ancestors as we let the beat of the drum call us into a deep meditative and contemplative space - seeking guidance and healing for ourselves and the world. Bring an eye mask, yoga mat, pillow, blanket, or whatever you need to make yourself comfortable on the floor. Drum Journey is usually best experienced prone and with eyes covered.

  • Full Moon Drum Circle - Practice and participate directly in an outdoor drum circle around the smokeless fire pit on San Gabriel's patio. No experience required. Bring your own drum or borrow one of ours. Come experience the ancient art and practice of collective drumming under the full moon.

  • Waning Moon Grief Tending - Practice the art and experience the gift of grief work. We will explore and create together adding in elements of song, poetry, movement, and deep listening to honor our collective grief & gratitude. Our gatherings welcome all forms of grief — personal, collective, ancestral, and relational — with care for whatever is present. There is no grief too big or too small for these circles.

  • Sacred Currents Reflections - Reflection sessions happen when the monthly calendar and the lunar calendar have an offset, usually about 3 times per year. We use the opportunity to gather together as practitioners and participants and reflect on what is working and what is not working about our Sacred Currents gatherings and practices.

Family and Children Guidelines for Sacred Currents:

  • Drum Circle is a fully family-friendly event. We do ask that parents take responsibility for intervening with their own children if they become disruptive to the gathering. This is a ritual space, even though a casual one. If you and your family are new to drumming, please feel free to ask a veteran for guidance.

  • Sacred Currents Reflections are family friendly and will be a casual yet ritualized space where child disruptions are manageable. Parents are expected to manage disruptions.

  • Sound Bath & Drum Journey are both music driven and quiet-calm oriented. If you;ve never been, think 'music guided meditation while laying on a yoga mat'. If your child would be a good fit for that vibe, they are welcome. If children become disruptive, we ask that parents remove themselves and the children as quickly and quietly as is reasonable.

  • Grief Tending is our least child-friendly Sacred Currents event style. We anticipate that parents might struggle to participate fully in griefwork if their attention is divided by their present children. Older children who wish to participate in the griefwork, however, are welcome when accompanied.

  • Childcare? - If your children are too young or these events are not a good fit for them, and you need on-site childcare to participate in Sacred Currents events, please send email to Eric Hepburn at minister@sangabrieluu.org and let us know. Please include numbers and ages of children, which events you are interested in, and whether paid childcare is an option for you. Wednesday evening childcare is not in this year's budget, but we will do what we can to support all who'd like to participate. (If you'd like to fund Sacred Currents childcare for the 2026-27 season, please email Eric.)
