Spanish/Bilingual Book Drive for GISD - August 2nd-31st

The Social Justice team is holding a Spanish language book drive for Georgetown ISD during the month of August. While being interviewed by KVUE back in March, I asked a GISD administrator how the district has been impacted by ICE presence in Williamson County. The impact has been steady, with less parental interaction at school hosted activities due to fear of deportation. GISD has had to slow down on advertising events, like open house, field day, meet the teacher night, etc. On top of this, there are more and more parents that do not feel safe enough to take their children to the library. With Spanish speaking parents, and English school work, this does not create the environment necessary to facilitate learning and bonding together at home. Thus, the need for Spanish, or at the very least bilingual books is vast! This would allow bilingual families to grow together at home, and WILL facilitate safe learning with safe adults.
The book drive will start on August 2nd, and ends on August 31st! This gives the district time to identify students who are in need of books for home. We will arrange a drop off with the district in the coming weeks. Our RE children will hopefully be working on some bookmarks/book notes for us to put in the books as well. :-)
Please feel free to pick up lightly used or new books in Spanish, and bring them with you to service across the next few Sundays. We have also created a bookshop list with lots of books! I know it is not as easy as Amazon, but this website favors small businesses over large corporations, and some proceeds could also be sent to Lark and Owl as they have been selected as our local book store. Speaking of, L&O has also agreed to be a drop off spot and share a flyer with the public.
